The Ashvale – Aberdeen

42 Great Western Rd
Aberdeen, AB10 6PY

September, 2008

This was our first restaurant experience in Aberdeen. The Ashvale has been cited as the best fish and chips in Aberdeen. Yes I am vegetarian, so why am I bothering to write about the Ashvale, a fish and chip shop? Well, it’s likely rare that a vegetarian finds them self going out for dinner with only other vegetarians. As I have a boyfriend with an adoration for fish & chips, we found ourselves here. Their menu does list some vegetarian dishes, which does at least acknowledge that vegetarians will find themselves at restaurants not to their tastes. As their may be other vegetarians trying to find a restaurant with vegetarian options along side fish and chips, I continue.

We went late in the evening and the service was a bit slow and lacking. We sat watching the waiters sit together cleaning glasses and silverware as we waited to pay our bill – not realizing we had to go to the counter to pay. It is a large restaurant lacking any atmosphere. It may be better for large families with children.

My dish: Veggie burger with onion rings.
Comments: It was just a veggie patty on a plain bun – no tomato, no lettuce, no sauce of any kind other than the bowl of typical British sauces in the middle of the table. It was very bland and looked like they only offer it to say that they offer vegetarian options. The batter on the onion rings was good, but again, very bland.

My boyfriend did have their staple dish, fish and chips, received a large portion, and said it was great.

If you are looking for cheap, good fish and chips at an eat-in restaurant, don’t care about atmosphere or vegetarian options, perhaps a good choice.
