The Illicit Still – Aberdeen

Guest Row,
Broad Street,
AB10 1AU

September – December, 2008 (multiple visits owing to cheap food prices)

Located near the city centre, it is a cozy pub offering a large, varied menu. The menu is typical pub food along with other dishes such as fajitas. There are quite a few vegetarian options as well, including veggie fajitas, vegetarian tortilla salad, veggie burger, ploughman sandwich, and veggie Yorkshire pudding. The food comes quickly and has always been fresh, however it sometimes takes a while for the order to be taken. Though this is a pub so that’s not a complaint. They have two-for-one Wednesday’s with their student card, and my below sections are covered in this deal.

My dish: Veggie Yorkshire pudding
Comments: As my first meal in a British pub, I loved it! As a vegetarian, it was great to be able to order a dish that’s typically not available to vegetarians. It came with 3 veggie sausages over mashed potatoes, in onion gravy, in a giant Yorkshire pudding. Not to everyone’s taste perhaps, but as something new and typical to Scotland, I thought it was great. Vegetarian sausages are not often served in restaurants in Canada, so this meal was quite novel to me. After the novelty of this dish wore off however, and I ordered in on other occasions, I did not enjoy it near as much, and did find it quite salty and less desirable. But if vegetarian bangers and mash is what your after – The Illicit Still does it well.

My dish: vegetarian tortilla salad
Comments: I thought this would come in one of those giant tortilla chip type bowls; however it was all the typical fajita ingredients (grilled veggies, avocado, cheese…) baked in a tortilla, with a salad on the side. Everything was good, no complaints, though didn’t leave a lasting memory.
